Contact made with Maltese in l’Aquila

The foreign ministry has said it has made contact with a group of Maltese who live in l’Aquila and in its surroundings in Abruzzo, where an earthquake has left 179 victims.
Foreign minister Tonio Borg said he is in constant contact with the Maltese embassy, and thanked the Maltese public for having passed on important information to the ministry which helped it identify any Maltese citizens in the zone.
Two women who lived in Chieti, just outside l’Aquila, said they were fine, while the Maltese nun who lost her house was also in good condition was expected to arrive in Malta shortly.
Another Maltese woman married to an Italian said she had made contact with her family and was fine, despite living in a car at present.
Another contact was made with a Maltese woman who lived in l’Aquila, who said that her and her three children were in good condition.
In the meantime, the foreign ministry has appealed for more information from the public about any Maltese citizens who live in the affected zone to contact the ministry on 21242191.
Following the disastrous earthquake which hit the Abruzzo region in Italy yesterday, the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs, through the Humanitarian Aid Section of the Civil Protection Department, has offered assistance to the Government of Italy, according to the requirements of the people who have suffered loss of property.
The Civil Protection Department will be issuing a call for collection of materials required by the people of Abruzzo, as soon as an indication of the requirements is received from the Italian Authorities.
