A spate of hold-ups in Swieqi, Bugibba and Msida has led to Alternattiva Demokratika to call for more police patrols in our streets.
Four people were robbed at gunpoint in Swieqi on Sunday by two youths in four-by-four. A young couple was also robbed at gunpoint 15 minutes later in St Paul’s Bay.
A witness in the Swieqi robbery said the hooded man instructed him to lay face down on the pavement and took his wallet, containing €60 in cash and his credit cards, and his mobile phone.
Minutes later, a 38-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl from Qrendi and a 37-year-old woman from Għaxaq were walking back to their car when they suddenly found themselves looking down the barrel of a gun.
Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika chairperson, stated: “Whilst we augur that the police solve these cases of robbery as quickly as possible, we believe that prevention is the best cure in this case. We therefore ask for more policemen patrolling our streets. If need be civil servants should replace policemen in clerical work, so that the latter are free to patrol our streets, thus giving a greater sense of comfort and safety to our citizens.”
