Police take stand in Karin Grech compensation case

Police Commissioner John Rizzo will today take the witness stand in Court to testify in the case of Karin Grech, who was killed on 28 December 1977, by a letter bomb addressed to her father Prof. Edwin Grech, a strike-breaker during the doctors’ strike.
The Grech family filed a case of compensation in January 2008, where Grech, his wife Pearl and son Kevin are demanding €582,343 (Lm250,000) in compensation.
The family is arguing that it was discriminated against because the government never met their compensation claim, while other victims of crime had received compensation.
MaltaToday has learnt that the two other witnesses summoned to give their version of events in today’s hearing are homicide squad inspector Chris Pullicino and former police inspector Charles Demicoli. The latter had served at the Sliema police station back in 1977, and was involved in the district investigation on Karin Grech’s murder.
A member of the Grech family confirmed with MaltaToday that today’s session would primarily focus on the way the police led the investigation over Karin Grech’s murder.
The family will be presenting other witnesses in court at a later stage, to prove they had suffered discrimination when they did not receive compensation for the assassination of Karin.
The Grech family is represented in court by Dr Emanuel Mallia and Dr Alex Perici Calascione.
