Malta in the Comen Cup

After almost a decade, the waterpolo Comen Cup intended primarily for the participation of Mediterranean nations, was again held at the National Pool in Tal-Qroqq. Apart from the locals there was the participation of six teams, comprising four nationals teams and three clubs. The Maltese national team participated with Great Britain, Switzerland and Cyprus, together with Cn Chania from Greece, FNC Douai from France, and the Italian side, renowned in international circles Rari Nantes Sori of Italy.
In its initial match Malta defeated the modest Cypriots 25-0, with the game resulting in a one-match story. On the second and third day of the competition, Malta defeated Switzerland 14-6, and Cn Chania with a 10-9 scoreline. In the semi-final played before a reasonable crowd on the terraces, Malta had an uphill struggle to defeat Great Britain in extra-time 12-11, a nation that is approximately of the same level as Malta. There was no doubt of the outcome of the final encounter against the Italian side, where Malta lost 16-6. This team has won the Italian waterpolo Coppa Italia and possess very strong, formidable and talented players.
One has to appreciated and admire the presence of the South End Core, synonymous with the national team’s football and rugby matches, who certainly made their presence felt.
But besides the Malta national team, ably led by Sergio Africa and his assistant Peter Decesare, the honours of the day goes to Aquatic Sports Association (ASA), for the perfect organisation and sterling opportunity given to our players to enhance their experience, and to the supporters in watching such a good-stuff competition.
