I refer to your article entitled “Emailgate”, published on 1 October 2008, in which you carried an allegation, supposedly made by senior Labour Party officials, to the effect that MITTS employees had improperly accessed the email accounts of certain Members of Parliament.
Early in September, the public was made aware that MITTS suspected that certain of its internal procedures may have been broken. Those suspicions were duly referred to the Police, who immediately started with their investigations. There was, however no indication, at the time, that any email accounts had been improperly accessed, as is alleged in your article.
On 1 October 2008 MITTS investigated the allegation carried in your paper. So far, it appears that there is no factual basis to support it, MITTS is informed that no allegation about improper tampering of email accounts has been reported to the Police and, in fact, the Police are not investigating any of our employees in connection with any such tampering.
It is unfortunate that, before going to print, you did not see fit to verify your allegations.
