Drainage department leaves mess near beach huts at Ghadira

A stretch of the protected garigue landscape facing Ghadira Bay – already in a shambles due to the beach huts constructed upon it – has suffered further deterioration as a pile of rubble was dumped at the far end of the huts that face the popular sandy beach.
It turns out that a contactor carrying out works for the Drainage Department left the rubble on site. According to the investigations carried out by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), the trenching works had been commissioned by the Drainage Department to lay pipes up to Ras il-Mejjieli.
“When works were completed the contractor deposited the inert material to the site in question,” a spokesperson for MEPA told MaltaToday.
Subsequently MEPA informed the Drainage Department about the accumulating piles of rubble. The department promised that the area would be reinstated.
Although MEPA has issued an enforcement notice the material is still on site.
