Precarity on the upturn, labour market data shows

In the twelve months to March 2008, part-time employment rose by 2,608, with those having a part-time job as their primary occupation went up by 1,664 persons.
Among part-timers who also hold a full-time job, there was an increase of 944 persons.
Labour market data for March 2008 indicates that the full-time gainfully occupied population increased by 2,907 persons, while unemployment decreased by 865 persons when compared to March 2007.
Labour market data, provided by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC), for the month of March 2008, shows the labour supply increased by 2,042 persons over the same month in 2007. The full-time gainfully occupied population increased by 2,907 persons, whereas the registered unemployed decreased by 865 persons.
In this way, the labour supply amounted to 149,644 persons. Of these, the full-time gainfully occupied population amounted to 143,476 persons, whilst the registered unemployed amounted to 6,168 persons.
In the twelve-months to March 2008, the economic activities which registered the main growth in full-time employment were real estate, renting and business activities; other community, social and personal service activities; and health and social work activities. Accordingly, the sector of real estate, renting and business activities increased 1,143 persons on its books. Among other activities, this sector includes accounting and auditing, security services and call centres. On its part, the sector of other community, social and personal service activities increased by 871 persons. Besides other activities, this sector includes betting companies. Once again, health and social work activities reported an increase of 479 persons.
On the downside, the number of the gainfully occupied persons fell in manufacturing and electricity, gas and water supply. In fact, manufacturing dropped 999 persons, whilst the sector of electricity, gas and water supply dropped 141 persons.
On a year-on-year basis, the number of self-employed persons increased by 218 to reach 16,878 persons. The main economic activities in which the self-employed persons operate are wholesale and retail trade and construction.
