Police anniversary commemoration tarnished

Michael Bonnici
Zebbug

It is a pity that the 193rd anniversary of the foundation of the Police Corp, so very well organised, was tarnished in the same week with a black event – having one of its members being found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment for hurting a foreign woman while on duty (case is now in the appeal stage).
Unequivocally the police force enjoys my full confidence and that of the great majority of all the Maltese people.
But this incident reminds me of a number of policemen who got away scot-free after hurting their fellow Maltese nationals in the recent years.
The two major political parties’ reaction to the above were in the past either blindfolding themselves or too weak to take action.
The history of the police force by Edward Attard should compile a list of those policemen who were not only the victims while carrying out their duty or other interesting events, but also the episodes when policemen on duty were found guilty of misconduct towards their compatriots as well as foreigners.
