White-washed Mdina Cathedral earns rebuke

Julia Farrugia

Mdina is a marked city – not from enemy attacks, but Church officials who have applied a coating of silverine on the rear of the Mdina Cathedral, effectively sullying the medieval city’s postcard image.
This newspaper has learnt that the silverine coating was carried out without any permits and in breach of environment regulations, while tourism stakeholders expressed their shock at the ‘attack’ on the view visible from Saqqajja hill.
Little if any public outrage was provoked from heritage and environmental watchdogs.
Despite having its own Environment Commission, no comment was forthcoming from the Archbishop’s Curia.
The Malta Environment and Planning Authority issued an enforcement notice against the action. The Mdina Cathedral received a registered notification on Thursday, but the bastions have not yet been returned to their original state.
