Multiple births account for 1,000 babies in nine years

Almost 1,000 children were born from multiple births in nine years, Sunday newspaper Illum reported this week.
According statistics published by the National Statistics Office, between 2000 and 2008 there were 898 twins, 48 of whom are triplets and 12, quadruplets.
The largest amount of twins was born in 2006 and 2008, with 62 pairs each year. The lowest number was born in 2001, with 29 pairs in total.
In 2004 there was the largest amount of triplets and quads. In all there were four sets of triplets and two sets of quads.
With regards to the mothers, those which fall in the age bracket of 25 till 29 years, had the most twin births with 35 percent of the total of 449 pairs of twins. The age bracket after them, mothers who were between 30 and 34 years old, had the second largest amount with 31 percent of the total amount.
