PL calls for more protection for domestic violence victims

The Labour Party voiced concerns echoed by the National Commission against Domestic Violence that many cases of domestic violence are going unnoticed and undisclosed.
“The fact is there are many cases which will never see the light of day and will never give us a real picture of the situation in our country,” Labour MP Justyne Caruana said.
“It is a fact that many reported cases of domestic violence are increasing, but there is need of a study into why so many incidents are not being reported.”
The Labour MP said the party was calling for the study to be carried out, but also for legal amendments that will strengthen protection orders for victims and to enforce the hearing of urgent cases. “Many of these cases are unfortunately being postponed to dates on which other cases are scheduled for.”
Caruana said victims of domestic violence should have their mind at rest that when they speak out, justice will be done with whoever abuses them physically, psychologically, and emotionally. “Labour is in solidarity with these victims and ask them to show courage and stand up against their abusers.”
