The Malta Union of Teachers yesterday declared an industrial dispute with the government over claims that no progress had been registered on a long-running issue of payment of allowances.
Teachers had already gone on a one-day strike over the issue last year, and observed a work-to-rule directive.
The union said the government had already committed itself back in June to look into the issue of allowances for teachers by January 1, but it had not been informed of any progress.
The union was demanding action to address “anomalies created when salaries given to other sections of the civil service were raised”. The MUT said the lack of communication was frustrating teachers in both State and Church schools.
The MUT council will meet on January 11 to look into what industrial action it will take if the situation remained unchanged.
