Human rights breaches in Malta

Judge Giovanni Bonello defended and won most human rights cases in Malta during the dark episodes in Maltese history when this country was under the regime of Dom Mintoff.
We remember that, of course, he was not nominated to his present post by the Nationalist Party but by a Labour government.
Lou Bondì should have asked him about cases relating to Malta, not about cases regarding various European countries – we don’t really care about but. How many Maltese individuals had to go the European Court of Human Rights for example?
How many, and who were the Maltese judges – including Chief Justices – that have been found guilty by the European Court of having breached human rights and/or guilty of miscarriage of justice in their sentences? Nothing has been done by any government about them.
Usually they are hushed up; or the leaders use the phrase “hallihom ha jghidu, issa ahna fil-Gvern u naghmlu li jaqbel lilna” – a phrase still used today by the front leaders of the Nationalist Party.
The Speaker of the House, who is chairing the committee to strengthen democracy, has not suggested any form of law regulating party expenses and when he does it will be a retroactive law, more so now that the Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition ‘agreed’ to write to him.
Maybe the Speaker is too busy with parliamentary rulings, contemplating his return to the politics, or part-time farming taking its toll.
Maybe Judge Giovanni Bonello should enlighten us about these questions being raised, as I am sure he will not be asked in a Lou Bondì ‘show’ or on any programme by TVM, Net or One.
