Saviour Balzan, in his editorial last Sunday, makes an appeal for all budding or seasoned politicians with some spine to come forward in order to replace what he sees as the currently decadent political class.
Such an apsersion comes in the wake of a similar statement he made some weeks back when he stated that he is always one to stand for the underdog. Whilst his concern for his fellow Maltese and his love for his country might be admirable, less so is his penchant to shoot down any budding politician who is hapless enough to get caught in the crossfire between himself and Dr Gonzi.
I make specific reference to the undersigned, who was the victim of relentless attacks by Mr Balzan throughout the past MEP campaign, despite being true to the values he has always upheld. Mr Balzan ensued with his despicable stance right to the very end, to the extreme that he chose not to publish an article of mine in the aftermath of the election and in which I denounced his modus operandi.
Another journalist, completely oblivious to what my campaign stood for, chose to take repeated swipes at me throughout the campaign, through malicious questions tailor-written by her spin-masters. When I hit back (and even apologised for doing so at a later stage), the same journalist resorted to rapping my knuckles through the Institute of Journalism.
Such senseless flak has convinced me that the political fray is certainly not worth the candle – whilst sacrificing your family, personal life and profession, even whilst being at odds sometimes with the political outfit you are running with just to uphold your beliefs, you get besmirched and lampooned unjustly, by journalists and commentators with not-so-hidden agendas.
My message to all aspiring politicians is – forget it, just lean back and focus on your family and profession. Thankless journalists have only themselves to blame for the political class we have.

Editorial note Mr Deidun is entitled to his views. As he well knows, MaltaToday has always published his contributions and letters. Saviour Balzan is likewise entitled to his own views, whether or not Mr Deidun feels they are unjustified. By entering the political fray, Mr Deidun became subject to the scrutiny reserved for other political actors, and cannot expect any favourable treatment because of his personal convinction that his political values should have found support by Mr Balzan.
