I refer to the recent contribution by Mr C. Gauci (‘Marsascala council lacking determination’). I fully agree with his views regarding the proposed yacht marina in our locality. I just wish that our local council had taken the same courageous stand as the St Paul’s Bay and St Julian’s local councils. These councils immediately understood that they do not stand to gain from the development of a yacht marina in their locality.
Our council must not adopt a ‘wait and see’ attitude, but must take a leading role in the interest of the residents and object to this proposal. It was the Ghaqda Bahhara u Sajjieda that first invited representatives of the consortium who submitted their proposal to MEPA to speak about this project. It should have been the local council who took this initiative.
From the very little information divulged by a spokesperson representing both the consortium and the Marsascala Sports Club, it is clear that it is only the eventual developer who stands to gain from this project. The construction of a yacht marina together with a submerged breakwater will spell the end for swimming in an already polluted sea and will destroy marine life in the bay.
The government is in favour of this project. Anything else to throw to the south? Why did MEPA specifically combine the re-development of the sports facilities at Zonqor Point with a yacht marina? I wonder. Is the Labour party also in favour of this project?
Just like the strong stand taken against the Sant’ Antnin recycling plant, I urge all residents of Marsascala to unite against this project. When all is said and done, the politicians can ride over us, residents of Marsascala, but at least we should not give up without a good fight, with or without the council’s help.
