Ta’ Qali sports facility ‘should be relocated’

Proposals for a multi-purpose sports facility at the Ta’ Qali Park have been questioned by leftwing non-governmenta organisation, Zminijietna - Voice of the Left.
Whilst welcoming proposals for more open spaces for sports activities, Zminijietna Voice of the Left questioned the choice of the Malta Sports Council to transform part of the Ta’ Qali park into a football pitch, a multi purpose pitch and an outdoor gym.
‘Ta’ Qali park should remain as green and as open as possible for recreational use, where people can walk and jog freely without boundaries and other restrictions,’ the NGO’s press officer David Pisani said yesterday.
‘It would make more sense if the Malta Sports Council identifies other areas for this purpose, including already existing areas which are not available for public use due to time restrictions and fee charges’.
Zminijietna - Voice of the Left appealed to Parliamentary Secretary Clyde Puli, to the Malta Sports Council and to MEPA to identify alternative sites for this otherwise positive proposal.
‘Government should also look into current procedures adopted by various sports clubs and local councils which are discouraging people, mostly young ones from making free use of their otherwise subsidized facilities.’
