Italian ship rescues 200 migrants

Yesterday, the Italian coastguard was involved in assisting a boat carrying some 200 migrants in the Libyan rescue zone, 70 miles north of Benghazi, in very rough sea conditions.
The Armed Forces of Malta denied Italian media reports that the AFM was involved in the operation. The AFM said the boat was located within Libya’s search and rescue region of responsibility, and the operation was coordinated by Italian authorities in conjunction with the Libyan authorities.
The alarm was raised by satellite phone call from the boat to an official of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on Friday evening. The Italian ship was directed to the migrants’ boat by the Italian rescue coordination centre in Rome.
