Fitness for the masses: outdoor gym earmarked for Ta’ Qali park

The Malta Sports Council has submitted an application to MEPA to develop a presently unutilised part of the Ta’ Qali national park as ‘an outdoor fitness centre’, which can be used free of charge by schoolchildren and families who frequent the park during the weekend.
The proposed development will consist of a football pitch, a multi-purpose pitch and an outdoor gym.
The area lies outside development schemes, consisting of fields located between the old Ta’ Qali runway and the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre’s tent.
“The Kunsill Malti għall-Isport shall be making this outdoor facility available for schools during school hours while it shall be available free of charge to individuals and families during non-school hours,” a spokesperson for parliamentary secretary Clyde Puli told MaltaToday.
Ta’ Qali was chosen as it already attracts a large number of families, especially during weekends. While most parks abroad consist of vast stretches of greenery where people relax in an informal environment, the environment in Malta’s only national park is being increasingly formalised with concrete walkways set around landscaped shrubbery.
