Air Malta doesn’t rule out redundancies

In a statement issued yesterday, Air Malta said it would resort to forced redundancies and outsource any of its operations, unless it could reach an agreement with the General Workers Union on the crucial issues of flexibility of rosters and an increase in productivity that the airline is seeking.
In a reply to GWU over the stall of negotiations between the two sides over collective agreement talks, Air Malta insisted that the GWU was formally notified that although it would not like to outsource, it could not operate at a higher cost than its competitors.
“Air Malta stressed this position throughout the talks and had always been focused on increased productivity and flexibility in the light of its financial situation and the various developments taking place within the industry,” the airline said.
The airline stressed that this was always the position adopted during negotiations with other unions representing other categories of employees within the airline.
Air Malta said that it was ready to continue discussions with the GWU with a view to conclude the collective agreement negotiations in the interest of the airline and its employees.
