The Prime Minister and the Cabinet are under siege. And rightly so, because notwithstanding the slim majority at the last election, they are acting as if they own Malta and that no one has the right to question their actions. It has become more like a dictatorship here.
The PN obtained a slim majority of 1,500 votes at the last election, which means that they only had a tiny majority of the people behind them. So how come the Prime Minister and his party disregard all the people’s opinions, even the most vociferous?
In 1986, most of Malta was against the Labour party because of the atrocities that led to the death of the late Raymond Caruana. Mintoff relented to the pressure building up against ‘his’ party and accepted a clause that the majority rules. Since then, Malta has been divided in half – neither party has a majority to speak of. If there was an election, I am sure the PN would get such a thrashing. Gonzi would have to go.
In the circumstances, I believe the only solution lies with spreading the responsibility of governing the country between both parties. The members of the Cabinet would come from both sides of the House and no secrets will remain within the Cabinet. Crazy, one might think. No sir. It is the reality of today’s politics. It is no longer acceptable that ministers, parliamentary secretaries and the prime minister think that they have a God-given right to govern. The people are suffering and will continue to suffer for lack of true democracy.
