Energy demands and power cuts

Enemalta Corporation refers to the article ‘Had enough of power cuts? Blame this government’, published on 23 August 2009 and written by Labour MP Evarist Bartolo. We would like to clarify some incorrect points in this article.
The recent power cuts were due to unconnected faults either in the generating plant or the distribution system. They have nothing to do with a lack of generation capacity. In fact the current peak demand is circa 380MW, and the available capacity is 460MW, which does not include a plant which is under repair capable of producing a further 40MW.
The actual rate of increase in demand for electricity has dropped as a result of several educational campaigns aimed at increasing conservation measures by the Maltese consumers.
The demand for electricity at Mater Dei is about 7MW, therefore about the same as St Luke’s Hospital used to have. This contrasts drastically with the claim that it is 12MW higher than St Luke’s Hospital as was reported in the article.
