Karl Stagno-Navarra The Ministry for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications is reportedly looking into an alleged discriminatory charge of €140 imposed on Gozitans who seek the emergency services of Enemalta engineers when faced with electricity faults at night.
A number of consumers in Gozo complained that they were left with no choice but to pay €140 to the engineers, who would turn up at their residence to look into the fault, even when it was found that the fault is located outside their house.
The charge is considered discriminatory as it is not imposed on any Maltese households. According to a Gozitan resident, who was charged €140 for the engineers’ visit, he was told that the dispatch had to be approved from Malta as there is no engineer night shift in Gozo to look into the emergency.
When the issue was brought up by the media, the ministry was apparently unaware of the situation and has asked Enemalta to look into the matter.
A ministry spokesman said that a decision regarding this issue is due imminently, indicating that this discriminatory charge will be waivered.
