The incredible tide

18 months have already passed since the Nationalist Party claimed, yet again, victory at the polls during the last General Election.
To some it came as no surprise, to those within the inner blue circle of trust came as a warning and for many of the Labour Party supporters came as a sure blow. 21 years in Government is no joke. You can be as diehard a Nationalist as they come, but the truth remains the same: being governed year in, year out by the same party for 21 years is an old recipe which leads to only one reality: disaster.
Of course, one can always hope for the better, that is perfectly normal, and one can always come to his own conclusions whether his preferred party is or has performed to its utmost to fulfill the many electoral promises which appeared like heaven-sent manna before the eve of each general election.
Our society cannot comply to certain unsocial measures especially when these measures are taken by a party which proclaims itself to be the ‘saintly party’. Nevertheless, I’m sure that a very high percentage of our society has now moved away from certain Church-related dogmas and has realised that the time spent on this earth is a God-given luxury which needs and can only be nurtured by social progress not by political gimmicks.
As far as elections go, the current EP elections exposed the people’s true feelings which went well beyond the colours they normally go for. Our politicians in power need to understand one vital norm: greed is sister to sin and brother to murder. The people have spoken, their message was clear. We want change. If that wasn’t clear enough then the party in government is not fit to govern these islands any longer. Being in power is one thing, using it for good, is a completely different story.
The Labour movement, led by Joseph Muscat, is a sure bet which people are now feeling from miles away. The stinking political measures which are being forcefully spilled over our society are not helping the Nationalist Party one bit; what they are really doing is drag this outdated government further into oblivion.
The Labour leader knows this well. His message of hope, unity and prosperity in times where people are crying for a clear direction and a much better future is being welcomed with open arms. The writing is clearly written on the wall and Joseph is interpreting the words very well.
Whatever the EP result may have produced and however one may interpret that result, the truth is that Joseph Muscat is pulling the people towards him, just like an incredible tide. The gap between the two major political parties had never been so wide. Irrelevant of the opinionists’ conclusions, the result sent a clear message of disgruntlement, sorrow and sadness which is growing daily in our country.
If this government really cares about this country and its people then it needs to radically change the way with which it is governing: a country which is not made up of a minor ‘well-off’ sector but of hundreds of ‘well underpaid’ families which are on a daily lifestyle struggle and are crying
for a helping hand. This is the time for our government to stop and think, to fall back down to earth and feel what the majority of the people of this country are feeling.
If it’s true that under the government’s eyes we are one nation, then everybody must have the same opportunities to achieve what he/she may desire. We cannot possibly accept that our vote is not respected. We express what we feel about our political parties with our vote and that, in a true democratic state, should be enough to produce the desired change which the people has voted for.
We have had enough of gimmicks, enough of broken promises, enough of rising power and gas bills, enough of incompetence, enough of irresponsibility, enough with our daily financial struggles, enough of our pitiful salaries, enough with our ‘monstrous’ cost of living and never-ending taxes, enough of the same old faces which marked a tough political era in our lives.
Yes, we want change and if the message wasn’t clear enough then just keep doing what you are doing now, keep ignoring the people and keep heading towards world record electoral defeat.
