Reference is made to Dr Anna Mallia’s column ‘MEPA, the MIA and credibility’, which appeared in MaltaToday Midweek of 29 July 2009.
Dr Mallia should no doubt be aware that it is the norm for building projects to be announced when the entities involved reach agreement, and this is done subject to related permits being issued. Indeed, MIA’s contract with Vodafone Malta, like all agreements of its kind, was signed clearly subject to MEPA approval. Nevertheless one cannot be precluded from forming an opinion and acting in accordance with one’s better judgement particularly when such opinion is based on solid facts.
To begin with, in 1996 MIA submitted an application for the construction of a commercial unit and approval was duly issued for such development, in fact the excavation of the site was commenced.
Thereafter, in 1997 an outline application for the setting up of a business park was submitted and this was also approved.
Moreover, the MEPA South Malta local plan endorsed by parliamentary approval clearly shows, under the aviation sector, that this area is earmarked as suitable for development.
Finally, Dr Mallia should also be well aware that as a company listed on the Stock Exchange, MIA is bound by law to announce such plans publicly.
In light of the above Dr Mallia may wish to undertake some research and may need to change her views on the credibility of this project since the foregoing gives clear indications that there is no reason to doubt that the necessary permits will be issued and her allegations are therefore unfounded.
