29 arrested in drugs crackdown

The Police’s drug squad has apprehended a total of 29 persons over the past week in connection with separate cases involving drug abuse and drug trafficking.
The first of thee separate operations took place last Sunday in Hamrun, where the police was informed that drug trafficking was taking place. Four suspects were arrested in the course of this operation, including a 23-year-old man believed to have been selling drugs.
Packets of heroin and cocaine were discovered on his person, under circumstances which suggested they were about to be sold.
Three other suspects from Marsascala, Marsa and Valletta all male – and aged between 25 and 32 – were also held for questioning.
On the same day, a second operation carried out in Santa Lucia by the police’s Mobile Squad resulted in the arrest of two youths aged 28 and 32, both from Naxxar, who were caught in the act of taking drugs.
On further enquiry the police managed to identify the drug trafficker responsible for selling them a quantity of heroin.
Elsewhere, on the night between Sunday and Monday, the police also raided a party in a place of entertainment in the vicinity of Rabat. 14 men, including a Spanish national, as well as three women, were arrested after being found in possession of cocaine, ecstasy, and cannabis Their ages vary from 19 to 33.
During the week, the police were also alerted to suspected drug-related activities in a number of localities.
Another young man and a woman aged 19 were caught with paraphernalia associated with heroin abuse. In addition, a 20-year-old man of Indian nationality was apprehended in Paceville while smoking cannabis.
In a separate incident, objects related to the trafficking of cannabis were discovered in a Tigne shop owned by a 22-year-old man from Sliema.
All persons involved in these incidents are expected to be arraigned in Court in the coming days. Police investigations continue.
