Blogging on the Times

The Sunday Times’ editorial of 28 June 2009 entitled ‘Seizing the Moment’ was the most insulting piece of writing by a journalist against
his own contributors. The editorial discussed the comments placed on the Times’ blog site and worse, insisted on their expected contribution towards Piano’s plan for Valletta.
The Times’ editor has this to say about the contributors to his blog site: “a postage stamp would actually provide more than ample space for the sum total of their (contributors) knowledge on a given subject.”
I wonder what size of stamp is required to hold the knowledge of the writer of such statement. The writer also insisted that contributors should support Piano’s plan on its site, and thus the title ‘Seizing the Moment’.
The editorial also carried a blatant lie, i.e. contributors to the site ‘are not restrained by an editor’s red pen.
On the same Sunday evening I posted a comment criticising the contents of the editorial. However, it failed to make it to the site. So much for contributors not being restrained by an editor’s red pen.
It is clear that the management of the Times is not happy about how its blog site is developing. It now realises, maybe too late, that blog contributors are not as manipulative as the regular contributors to the printed version of the newspaper. I can assure you that the editor’s red pen is quite active.
I regret that I had to write to MaltaToday, a competitor of the Times. However, I had no alternative but to highlight this idiotic attack on the freedom of expression.
