Driver charged 700% interest for ‘late’ CVA payment
David Darmanin
A motorist received a nasty surprise when he was mailed a month-old bill for parking in Valletta, and a late payment fee on the same day.
The motorists received both a €5.00 late payment fee, as well as a parking fee of €0.82c that had remained pending for a month on the CVA parking system’s records.
The Sliema man said he received the two CVA bills on the same day, even though the two were dated a month afar. The first, dated 13 April 2009, invoiced the payment of €0.82c in parking fees. The second, dated 14 May 2009, added a €5.00 late payment fee to the €0.82 owed the month prior.
“It would have been cheaper for me to borrow €0.82 from a loan shark,” he joked. “€5.82 represents 710% of the original €0.82c.
“The irony of it all is that the slogan featured on CVA’s letterhead reads: ‘Towards a better future’. I wonder whose future they are referring to.”
