Tough with the weak

A few weeks ago, when the PN propaganda was in full swing, I was busy preparing for a second tax audit in four years. To clarify, I have to say that I had not amassed great wealth speculating in real estate or ODZ land development. I am a humble family man who tries to save a pound for a rainy day. But I sinned some eight years ago when I did not declare interest on a fixed account I had with the bank. And for that, the guillotine of Madame Taxman fell on my head. I had to pay what I had earned, plus interest at 12% and an excessive penalty.
The consequence was made even hurtful by accusing me of fraud and obliging me to give back whatever children’s allowance I had received. This was the first clean sweep by a new politician who used his power to be weak with the tough but strong with the weak.
As a precaution to avoid repeating the same mistake, after the first episode I vowed not to claim children’s allowance, even though I may be entitled to it. Recently, I also vowed not to tie any money down with the bank long-term to earn me any interest. In this way, I can make sure I will not defraud the Gonzi government of any tax to which his government would be entitled to, as a result of his highly socially-conscious policies.
