Former Labour candidate moves to Libertas think-tank

Robert Micallef, a former Labour MEP candidate, has been appointed secretary of a think-tank for Libertas, the eurosceptic pan-European party contesting this year’s European Parliament elections.
Micallef said the think-tank was set up to come forward with solutions on how to further democratise the EU.
Micallef said his appointment is on a voluntary basis. “Libertas is about European politics, and must be seen separately from a party dealing with national issues,” Micallef said. “The idea is to strengthen European institutions, and I am interested in that aspect. Libertas is appealing for everyone’s support – whatever the political affiliations.”
Micallef was at the Libertas Malta headquarters in Msida last week, for the launch of Mary Gauci’s candidature, alongside Libertas founder Declan Ganley, the Irish millionaire and anti-Lisbon campaigner.
The Libertas programme for a better Europe will be published on this site in the coming weeks.
An economist by profession, Robert Micallef is Malta editor for Eurobarometer surveys published by the European Commission and teaches European Policy at the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accounts of the University of Malta.
He was previously employed as an economist with the European Commission and formed part of the EU delegation to Malta during the accession negotiations.
In 2004, he was a Labour candidate for the European Parliament elections, having previously been an international secretary for the Labour youth forum.
