The Nationalist Party yesterday hailed the investiture of George Abela as President of the Republic as “a historical and special moment for the country”.
In a statement yesterday, the PN paid tribute to Eddie Fenech Adami, whose tenure as president ended yesterday.
The party described Fenech Adami as a “statist who dedicated his life and energy to the country’s liberty, democracy and its place in the EU.”
“As Opposition leader and then as Prime Minister, Eddie Fenech Adami faced difficult times in his political life, which however strengthened his values and beliefs. Fenech Adami always had faith in the Maltese people and believed that justice would prevail. Thanks to him Malta was radically changed into a modern, democratic European country.”
The PN added that Fenech Adami’s vision to see Malta in the EU had elevated the island from “its second-class status”.
The PN also paid tribute to George Abela, describing him as a politician “who always upheld his principles strongly and clearly.”
The party said the choice of George Abela had proved the country’s political maturity and was a significant step towards more unity among the people.
“Lawrence Gonzi’s decision to nominate George Abela for this highest of roles has sent a positive message. This step should now be followed through with a presidency that continues to unite the people. The choice of Abela was welcomed by the Maltese as a historical step that confirmed Lawrence Gonzi’s prudence in important decisions he takes for the country.”
On its part, Alternattiva Demokratika saluted Abela and wished him all the best as first citizen of Malta.
AD chairperson Arnold Cassola said: “Our country deserves a President elected by a strong majority in parliament, one who can help to unify our people and who also enjoys the respect of the international community.
“As from now George Abela represents all of us, whether PN, PL, AD or what not, and is the President of all Maltese and Gozitans without distinction. We are sure he will carry out his mandate in the best of ways.”
