Sudden infant death

In the article on cot death (15 March 2009) reference was made to our paper published in the Malta Medical Journal. We would like to make the following clarification. At the time of our study, it was still acceptable to advise parents to place their babies to sleep either on their back or on the side. So the title of your article, “19% of midwives give wrong advice”, is misleading.
It is now known that “back to sleep” is the safest position for infants. Our audit demonstrated how quickly most midwives had adopted the new advice. We are confident that the educational process that started two years ago is ongoing and all mothers are now advised to place their infants to sleep on their back.
