George Abela’s nomination

With reference to Saviour Balzan’s article entitled “Retracing George Abela” (18 January, 2008) allow me to point out the following:
There is no question that I follow the collective decision of the PN parliamentary group and I congratulate Dr Abela on his nomination.
This nomination was discussed in a PN parliamentary group meeting. Since this was an internal discussion, I cannot disclose what was said - except to state that the group’s conclusion is one and clear and it has been publicly expressed by the Prime Minister.
If internal discussions in a parliamentary group had to be made public – with who said what and why – decisions of this importance would not be debated thoroughly before being taken because members would be reluctant to express themselves freely for fear of ending up in the media. That would be a great pity.
