Nature reserves like the Majjistral national park will soon be guarded by rangers which will be granted executive powers to clamp down on vandals and other law-breakers.
Replying to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Leo Brincat, Resources Minister George Pullicino revealed that government employees which have been seconded to work with environmental organisations will be granted executive powers similar to those granted to local wardens.
MaltaToday can confirm that discussions on this matter have been taking place for the past two years.
Nature Trust has making this proposal for the past years. In an interview with MaltaToday in May 2007, Nature Trust president Vince Attard proposed introducing a system through which NGO reserve managers would be given executive powers to fine those causing damage to the environment. World Wildlife Fund officials are given this power in Italy.
