Union reactivates industrial actions

The union of professional officers at the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (UPAP) has reactivated with immediate effect its industrial actions after management failed to comply with an agreement reached with UPAP which led to the suspension of industrial actions on 22 October 2008.
The industrial actions are over grievances that UPAP said had negatively affected its members because MEPA has not implemented a court decision related to work issues.
UPAP members have been directed to follow the below actions with immediate effect until further notice.
The list of directives include suspending meetings with the MEPA chairman or directors, board or DCC, local councils, government ministries and departments, the general public, consultants, architects and applicants; no attendance to meetings abroad except for those already approved; no answering of telephones, communications by fax or email; no response to MEPA or DCC deferments, EU communications and parliamentary questions, and no on-call duties.
The union said it reserved the right to escalate actions should no progress in the matter be made.

The turning of the tide
Friday’s collective protest by all Malta’s unions against the government’s revised utility tariffs should impart a powerful message to the Lawrence Gonzi administration: that there is a limit to political arrogance, and one crosses the line only at one’s own risk>>
