The 1977 doctors’ strike

For the sake of accuracy, with regards your editorial of the 29 October, 2008 (Mintoffianism rules, Ok), in the 1977 dispute between Mintoff and the doctors, the doctors did not go out on a half-day strike at all. There was only a partial industrial action during which MAM offered and tried to provide an emergency service.
The doctors were forcibly prevented from giving this emergency service by a lock-out on 3 June 1977 enforced by a posse of policemen. Press photographs of this incident prove this indubitable fact – one of these photographs being so clear that it shows the Hon. Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Danny Cremona with bared teeth (some of them missing) being restrained by the police from attacking some of the doctors!
Please publish this letter to scotch the canard that the doctors went on an all-out strike abandoning the sick to their fate!

The turning of the tide
Friday’s collective protest by all Malta’s unions against the government’s revised utility tariffs should impart a powerful message to the Lawrence Gonzi administration: that there is a limit to political arrogance, and one crosses the line only at one’s own risk>>
