Legendary Smiths drummer Mike Joyce for Malta gig

In what promises to be one of the top music events of the year, the highly acclaimed UK alternative band Autokat will be headlining a much anticipated concert at Sky Club, Paceville on Friday 3rd October.
If that wasn’t enough, drummer Mike Joyce from legendary 80s band The Smiths has joined forces with the band. Joyce went on to play with other hugely influential bands such as PIL, The Buzzcocks, Julian Cope and Sinead O’Connor after the Smiths split up, not to mention his side-projects with musicians from Oasis and The Stone Roses.
Based in Manchester, Autokat released their debut album ‘Late Night Shopping’ last year receiving widespread critical acclaim. Dubbed a “classic Mancunian debut” by Music Week magazine, the Guardian describe Autokat as “simply fantastic” while Uncut Magazine gave the album a four-star review, describing Autokat as the “northern variant of Bloc Party”.
Autokat’s debut single ‘The Driver’ was The Independent’s single of the week and their last single ‘Innocence’ was record of the week on Steve Lamacq’s Music Show on BBC.
The night won’t belong to Autokat alone though. Two of Malta’s best new bands, the Areola Treat and Airport Impressions will also be taking the stage.
The Areola Treat are probably Malta’s most powerful rock’n’roll outfit, having released their debut EP on Belgian label Kinky Star and only recently having played dates there as well.
Airport Impressions are a more melodic alternative outfit who cite U2 and Coldplay as influences, with their two singles taking the radio waves by storm and topping the Bay Radio charts.
Guesting as DJ for the night will be the great Wayne Flask, a fixture on the alternative scene.
Promoters Hairy Amp are organising the concert, with tickets on sale for €10 from Muddy Waters, Juuls (St Julian’s), Coconut Grove (Paceville) and D’Amato and Sound & Vision (Valletta). Tickets retail for €12 at the door. More information on email at info@hairyamp.com
