Labour environment spokesperson Leo Brincat said that he will move a private member’s Bill that will introduce an annual parliamentary reporting system on climate change, and that will make it mandatory for the government to keep the public updated on the impact of global warming.
The bill, which he announced in a meeting with climate change committee chairman David Spiteri Gingell, would made it mandatory to identify the impact of climate change on tourism, immigration, agriculture and water resources.
Brincat said he was taking this step after having received no reaction from government since 18 August, when he recommended the climate change legislation to be undertaken by government.
Brincat also told Spiteri Gingell that a system of checks and balances was needed to put people’s minds at rest that the country was making the maximum use of its resources.
David Spiteri Gingell said he agreed about having an annual report but said the biggest challenge was to set targets which were achievable. He said the committee was working on a strategy, one of whose points would be legislation for the enforcement of climate change targets.
