Illegal fireworks seized by customs

A trailer was yesterday afternoon identified by Customs’ officers at Laboratory Wharf as containing unspecified explosives material.
At around 4:30pm, the Armed Forces of Malta’s Operations’ Centre at Luqa Barracks was alerted by the ports’ duty officer to this find by Customs, and requested the assistance of 3rd Regiment’s Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit (EOD) on the scene to provide an initial assessment of the find.
AFM EOD personnel found that the explosive material was ready-for-use fireworks, which had been hidden behind some wooden container pellets. Their considerable number could not be immediately ascertained at the time.
Further arrangements went into action last night for the customs department to transfer the seized material elsewhere ahead of their disposal by destruction.
Duty magistrate Edwina Grima appointed various experts to help out in the inquiry. Police investigations are ongoing with the Rahal Gdid police force and the Immigration Department’s special unit.
