One of Balzan’s landmark establishments, Villa Madama, will go under the hammer in a court auction in October, the Government Gazette announced.
The establishment has been valued at €885,161.
Villa Madama, a popular venue for weddings, is the property of Venues Company Ltd, and was put up for auction on application of HSBC Bank Malta back in 2006. The auction will be held in the law courts.
The building dates back to Grandmaster Antoine de Paule (1623-1636), the Hospitaller knight who founded Paola back in 1626. Villa Madama was originally built as a country residence for de Paule and his friends, amongst whom were Caterine Valente – the lady who gave the villa its name.
