Tourism authority discloses Sheffield sponsorhip deal

In the wake of various reports relating to the sponsorship agreement between the Malta Tourism Authority and Sheffield United FC for the 2008/9 football season, the MTA, with the consent of Sheffield United, yesterday put an end to the speculations regarding the value of this agreement by disclosing the sum involved.
The MTA will be paying the club GBP350,000 for the year-long sponsorship deal. Spokesperson Kevin Drake said this was a far cry from the “multi-million pound” amounts first reported.
Yesterday Labour MP Marie Louise Coleiro-Preca called on government to declare the amount spent by the Malta Tourism Authority in its sponsorship of British football team Sheffield United.
“This authority operates with public funds, and has already been the subject of various debates concerning the use of its public monies... government has the responsibility of ensuring the spending of people’s money delivers results,” the MP said.
