Mater Dei emergency sees 305 patients daily

An average of 305 people are being seen daily at the hospital emergency department, government said yesterday.
Last year, 111,688 patients were seen at the E&A department. Of these, 15,119 were taken to Mater Dei via ambulance.
30,174 of the total number were referred by their family doctors or health centres to be taken to hospital. The rest went to the department of their own will.
The government however said the majority could have easily availed themselves of their local health centres or family doctors.
The number of callers at the department reached 36,435 in the first four months of this year.
In its statement, the ministry of health said the E&A department did not see to patients on a first come, first served basis, but according to the seriousness of their case. It said the waiting time depended on the gravity of the cases concerned.
