Polidano applies for retirement home in Safi in a green area
James Debono
Eleven years after having the temerity to apply to change Safi’s development zones to make way for more development, Charles Polidano has now applied to construct an home for the elderly on the same ODZ site in Triq il-Fenici.
Back in 1996 the Planning Authority had rejected Polidano’s unique application to extend Safi’s development zones, arguing that the site should remain outside development schemes.
The refusal was confirmed by MEPA’s Appeals Board three years later. The site was not even included in the latest extension of Malta’s development zones issued in 2006.
The new proposed development lies right next to two illegally developed villas belonging to Alfred and Paul Polidano. The two villas are also located in the same zone on which Charles Polidano had applied for a “change in scheme” in 1996.
In 2005 the MEPA Board rejected applications to sanction the two villas but an appeal on these cases is still being heard by the Appeals Board.
Last year MEPA had also issued an enforcement order against the dumping of construction waste on the site now earmarked as a home for the elderly. The case was referred for direct action in April 2006 but no further action was taken since then.
