NEWS | Sunday, 07 October 2007 Two fans charged with fracas at football match Two football fans were charged in Court yesterday after causing a fracas during the Valletta-Sliema match at the National Stadium at Ta’ Qali on Thursday evening.
The fans – Jonathan Spiteri, 26, of St Julian’s, and Joseph Omar Cumbo, 37, of Santa Lucija, were accused of inciting people to commit a crime, violently resisting a Police Superintendent and other members of the police corps during the discharge of their duties as well as defaming and insulting them. They were also charged with disobeying legitimate police orders, violating good order and public peace as well as swearing and making other obscene gestures in public. Cumbo alone was accused as well of causing slight injuries to the Police Superintendent. The accused pleaded guilty to the charges presented against them in Court. They were sentenced to seven months’ imprisonment suspended for four years and a Lm400 fine each. Moreover, Spiteri and Cumbo were banned from all football grounds for two years.
