TOP NEWS | Sunday, 12 August 2007 Ostreopsis not an alien species
When interviewing Prof. Victor Axiak last week, my enthusiasm for the subject caused me to misrepresent a few scientific facts. “Ostreopsis ovata” is not alien to the Mediterranean, as the interview suggested. Instead, it is a new species only for Malta, where it was first identified in 2002. The “15 new species a year” mentioned by Prof. Axiak involve mainly fish, shellfish and aquatic plants such as Caulerpa (not “cauleppa”, as incorrectly reported). Also, the test whereby a sample of seawater is shaken, and the foam levels measured, aims to identify pollution caused by detergents, not microbes. Sincere apologies for the errors.
