Resign!

Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando

Dr Alfred Sant uses the word ìresignî very flippantly. He must have asked for the resignation of most cabinet members at one time or another. It would seem he has some form of roster: every minister gets his turn eventually. He insists that political dishonesty should be castigated with instant removal. I wonder if heís familiar with the expression ìwhatís good for the goose is good for the ganderî.
It is now a universally accepted fact that weíre to receive over a billion euros in aid from the European Union. Dr Sant, in the run-up to the EU membership referendum, solemnly assured us over and over again that we would only be getting one and a half million liri. Do the maths and youíll appreciate what we stood to lose had Dr Santís misinformation campaign worked. Isnít that an example of political dishonesty of the highest order?
Dr. Sant also told us that we would be invaded by European Union nationals looking for work once we became members. I donít think he was referring to the likes of Sting, Enrique Iglesias, Zucchero and Jose Carreras. Isnít that another example of dishonesty?
I could go on but Iíd need much more than a half page article.
Perhaps Dr Sant should set the example and start by resigning himself.
MELODIOUS MALTA
The number of high calibre concerts held in Malta over the past weeks is nothing short of incredible. The private promoters who are putting a lot of time, energy and money into bringing top artists to our country should be applauded. Government also deserves a pat on the back for what must definitely rank as the most smoothly organised mass event ever held on our islands, last weekís amazing MTV concert.
I know Iím digressing but seeing all those thousands of young fans dancing to the music on il-Fosos brought back memories of when I was their age and attended mass events organised to help in the fight for democracy in exactly the same square. Times have, thankfully, changed.
Weíre definitely capable of organising this kind of event so we should be exploring the possibility of doing more to promote them abroad in our bid to attract more tourists. Having Malta linked to the big names weíre managing to attract to our shores can only have positive repercussions on our image.
HAIRSPRAY
Iím restricted to watching films which are rated U and PG whenever I go to the cinema because I usually end up going with my nine-year-old daughter, Marija. My choice of films is limited. When we went to the cinema last Sunday we realised that we had already seen all the appropriately rated films except ëHairsprayí so I ended up watching it against my better judgment. Seeing John Travolta in drag was not my idea of fun. But the film was precisely that, loads of fun. I highly recommend it and the way the heroine, excellently portrayed by Nikki Blonsky, stands up for the rights of those whom society may regard as being ëdifferentí sends the right messages across without being condescending.
