Death of a survivor

Peppi Gellel, Malta’s oldest man, passed away on Monday, 24 May at the venerable age of 104. He was immortalised by the lens of Joe P. Smith in ‘Survivors’, the photographic oeuvre on Vittoriosa’s elderly that won Smith overall wining image in the EU Competition ‘Cultures on My Street’. Gellel, a tailor who remarked that “all [he] had known about life was work”, was still active at 103 sowing the festa valances. A father of six, Gellel lived through both world wars in the 20th century, and remembered the 7 June incidents of 1919.
