Barroso an obstacle to Ecological Europe

World Earth Day (April 22) was the day dedicated to our planet.
With regard to Europe agenda on climate change, Zminijietna believes that the Presidency of Barroso is an obstacle to the road towards an Ecological Europe. Under his previous presidency most of the so-called reforms were of a neo-liberal agenda, leading to a rise in poverty and precarious work.
Many of the environmental policies and strategies favour only the private sector, to the detriment of the environment.
Zminijietna believes that a solution for climate change is a political one. Various non-governmental organisations represented in the Malta EU Steering Action Committee (MEUSAC) should lobby the Government for a more social and ecological Europe, also with respect to the European strategy for 2020.
Last week a conference on climate change, a left initiative, was held in Cochabamba, Bolivia, between19 and 22 April.
It was attended by many environmental and social movements, cooperative organisations, political parties, farmers’ groups and many others.
The conference is in preparation for the world summit on climate change to be held in Mexico at the end of this year. We believe that it is essential that the political class, the social partners represented in MEUSAC and MEPs take note of what has been said during the conference.
