20% of young unemployed from harbour area

Of the 241 persons aged under 18 and registering for work, 49 hail from the eight towns bordering the Grand Harbour.
These account for one fifth of all unemployed young people, even if only 7.2% of the Maltese population lives in Valletta, Floriana, Marsa and Cottonera.
The statistics also show that 134 out of 241 young people registering for work (55%) hail from southern or south-eastern localities, which in total account for only 35% of the population.
These statistics tally with the regional north south divide, which shows northern localities boasting the highest rates of post secondary education.
Zejtun, Poala and Bormla emerge as the towns with the highest number of under 18-year-olds seeking work.
Localities like Mellieha, Swieqi, Lija and St Julian’s did not even report a single 18-year-old registering for work. These localities also register higher rates of students following a post secondary education.
Only 5% of under 18-year-olds seeking work hailed from Gozo. And of the total number of unemployed, 40% were females.
Cospicua registered the highest number of young females registering for work, while Zejtun registered the highest number of young males registering for work.
