Malta’s stand on climate change deeply disappointing

Moviment Graffitti would like to express its disappointment at Malta’s opposition to an EU commitment to an emissions cut of 30% from 20% below 1990 levels over the next decade.
For us, this is a further confirmation that the government does not have environmental issues at heart, despite its pretentious promises before the Copenhagen Summit and on other occasions.
While the government’s focus should be on sustainable energy creating green jobs and working for a sustainable green economy, from the current situation it is obvious that these targets are not going to be met. What the government does not want to accept is that climate change does affect every aspect of life – not only will future generations suffer greatly, but present ones already do. Besides the effects that are usually mentioned, even Malta’s economy will be affected by climate change.
Moviment Graffitti would like the government to focus its priorities on schemes such as the recent financial program on domestic photovoltaic systems and increasing the feed in tariff rate, rather than spending time and energy in opposing the above-mentioned EU initiative.
