Qormi mourns its dead

The Qormi green and white clan dedicated to martyr St Sebastian, will this afternoon bid farewell to two of its biggest activists who died tragically on Monday in a fireworks factory explosion.
Damian Agius, 21 nicknamed ‘Djamant’ and Alfred Stellini, 44, who lost their lives in the explosion that also injured another three, will be held in the parish of St Sebasatian at 3pm.
The Kummisjoni Zghazagh Bastjanizi saluted the memory of the two men in a media statement.
James J. Piscopo, the commission’s public relations officer, said that Damien Agius was considered to have had good prospects in the manufacturing of ground fireworks, while the other victim, Alfred Stellini was a family man and an expert in the production of fireworks.
“The Lord wanted to call them early to enjoy their spectacle well before the Ground Fireworks Festival,” he said.
Piscopo explained in the statement that Damien was very active in practically all societies involved in the organisation of the St Sebastian feast. He was also a close follower of Qormi FC.
“He was happy, a tease, but he always carried a smile and full of enthusiasm,” Piscopo said.
Alfred Stellini, who worked in Libya and was married to one of Malta’s only women involved in fireworks manufacturing, was also described as a happy man.
“He was a man of values, worked hard for his family that always came first, even though he went through great personal sacrifice working abroad, often in conditions which were not the safest for workers,” he stressed.
The commission thanked the two men for their generosity and for the love they had shared.
Meanwhile, forensic and explosives experts continued to comb the area near Tal-Handaq where the explosion occurred in a bid to find evidence of what could have triggered the blast.
Other fireworks that wwere stored in rooms close to the one that exploded were made safe, while cinders were put out early yesterday morning.
